Hi Joel, Thanks for your question! If there is an option for a class 3 hitch on a vehicle we generally recommend you chose that over a class 1 or 2 simply because of the drastic increase in available accessories for 2" receivers. If you're ever planning to use a cargo carrier, bike rack or mobility carrier the higher tongue weight on class 3 hitches will allow for much heavier accessories. There is no disadvantage as far as the install procedure or how long it would take. If you'd like to discuss your options further please feel free to contact us - info@hitchweb.com or 1-800-300-4067 Thank you!

I have the 2014 escape 1.6l. I think I understand correctly that I could pick between a class 2 and a class 3 based on receiver size--keeping in mind that my escape will not be able to pull the maximum weight a class 3 could--however, before I choose the class 3 based on more options for cargo carriers for a 2" receiver etc--are their any downsides to picking the class 3 and installing it?

Hello Heidi,

Is the bike rack a 2" or 1-1/4"?

That will ultimately be your determining factor. New hitch designs are coming out regularly, but here are the Ford Escape Trailer Hitches you'll be able to narrow your search by receiver size.

Please contact our team if you need further assistance, thank you!

I have a 2014 Escape Titanium with the hands free liftgate. I want a hitch that will still allow me to use the hands free liftgate. I have a bike rack that holds 2 bikes standing up.(Thule T2 platform rack)
