Fifth Wheels And 5.5' Beds

I have a 5.5' truck bed, can I install a fifth wheel hitch?

Due to trailer to cab clearance, installation of a fifth wheel on any bed less than 6' was not recommended. PullRite created the SuperGlide to fix this problem. SuperGlide 5th Wheel's automatically move the trailer away from the cab while making turns - allowing up to 90° turning without stopping, slowing down or even thinking about the space between the truck & trailer - and then automatically returns the hitch and trailer to the safe towing position over the truck axle when the turn is completed. No more having to get out of your truck to adjust your 5th Wheel!

Hi - for a 5.5ft box there are 2 recommendations: Pullrite automatic sliders - a complete kit will require a fifth wheel, rail kit and capture plate kit. Or you can add a sidewinder pin box extender to set your pivot point 20" back for extra clearance. You would also need a fifth wheel and rail kit to go with that- custom brackets can also be added for an easier install. If you'd like to contact us at info@hitchweb.com with your full vehicle application (year/make/model/submodel/drivetrain) we can send you a quote with several different options. Thank you!

Hello Sokcap48, If you've already confirmed that clearance will not be an issue and a slider is not required then our most popular setup would be as follows: Fifth Wheel# 16115: https://www.hitchweb.com/product/88/16115/16K-E16-5th-Wheel-requires-Rails Rail Kit # 16200: https://www.hitchweb.com/product/88/16200/10-Bolt-Style-5th-Wheel-Gooseneck-Universal-Installation-Kit-Matte-Finish If you can let us know which model of RAM you have (1500/2500/3500) we can also price you out a custom bracket kit rather than using the universal brackets that come with the 16200. Just contact us at info@hitchweb.com if you have any questions or would like more options. Thank you! Hitchweb Team

Hi Jerald, Here's our recommended setup for a 2009 Nissan Titan 5.5ftbed: 12K Fifth Wheel: PR3100 - https://www.hitchweb.com/product/88/PR3100/12K-Super-Glide-5th-Wheel Fifth Wheel Rail Kit :PR3115 - https://www.hitchweb.com/product/88/PR3115/SuperRail-Custom-Kit-for-12K-Super-Glide-5th-Wheels-Nissan Universal Capture Plate: 3317 - https://www.hitchweb.com/product/88/3317/Pullrite-Capture-Plate-5th-Airborne-Multi-Fit If you can provide us with the make and model number of your kingpin coupler we can see if there is a custom fit capture plate available rather than using the universal fit. You can find all current pricing on our site by following those links. If you have any other questions please let us know. Thank you! Hitchweb Team

Hi Don, If you'd like to continue using your previous Reese 14K hitch in your new truck I'd actually recommend calling tech support to see if a Reese Sidewinder is an option (https://www.hitchweb.com/category/HD-A-3-3/5th-Wheel-Couplers). Sidewinders will set your pivot point 22" back towards the rear of the tow vehicle giving you much better clearance. The tech team will need to know the model number of your king pin as well as a measurement on how much additional clearance you require. Please call 1-800-632-3290 and ask for tech support. If you'd consider a Pullrite automatic slide fifth wheel these have been designed specifically for extra short bed trucks. Fifth Wheel: PR3100 - https://www.hitchweb.com/product/88/PR3100/12K-Super-Glide-5th-Wheel Rail Kit: PR3119 - https://www.hitchweb.com/product/88/PR3119/SuperRail-Custom-Kit-for-12K-Super-Glide-5th-Wheels-Ford You will also need a capture plate to adapt your Pullrite fifth wheel to your king pin coupler. Because there is no specific listing for your current factory coupler we again recommend calling the tech department as they will need a series of measurements off your king pin. If we can help further please give us a call at 1-800-300-4067 or email info@hitchweb.com Thank you, Hitchweb Team

I just upgraded my tow vehicle to a 2014 Ford F150 XLT with 5.5 foot bed, 3.5 Eco Boost engine rated for 11,000 lbs. max tow. I already have my previous Reese 14K hitch with new rail kit mounted. My 5th Wheel is a 2012 Jayco Eagle HT approx. 30 feet long, loaded weight 9950 lbs. that came from the factory with a Reese Revolution king pin. During my first hookup and test I discovered I cant make reasonable comfortable turns without hitting the back glass. What do you recommend?

Hello Pier, We recommend the 15K Reese #30093 Pro Series fifth wheel hitch, with the 30035 Reese rail kit and the 50087 Reese Custom Install Bracket Kit. A Sidewinder King Pin is also required with this short bed truck. To find the correct sidewinder kit, please see our 5th Wheel Couplers category: https://www.hitchweb.com/category/HD-A-3-3/5th-Wheel-Couplers And use the vehicle search on the left side of the page to filter though the options. The Sidewinders are king pin specific. For further tech support please contact our team at 1-800-300-4067

Unfortunately Mike your suggestion does not increase the distance from the cab while turning. Only while going straight. You would need a sidewinder on your trailer or a sliding hitch.

I have a 2016 Ford f150 XLT with 5.5 foot bed, 3.5 eco engine etc. enough to handle 11500 lb. load.. I want to hook up a 5th WHEEL trailer: Jayco Eagle HT approx. 31 feet long, loaded weight 9950 lbs. What kind of hitch do I need to 1) keep the weight on the axle when towing? and 2) insure clearance so I don't crush my cab when turning? What is the max degree turn I can make?
